Three Black Widow drinks share a Halloween name but have different formulas. The printable card describes only the vodka-blackberry juice version. No true-black color is promised.
Vodka-Blackberry Juice Version
1 drink; 7.25 fluid ounces before ice. 5 minutes with prepared syrup.
Ingredients
- 4 fluid ounces pasteurized blackberry juice or blackberry juice blend, chilled
- 1/4 fluid ounce lemon juice
- 1 fluid ounce commercial simple syrup, or prepared plain syrup from the component below
- 2 fluid ounces vodka
- 1/2 cup ice
- 2 washed blackberries, optional garnish
Method
- In a 14-fluid-ounce glass, stir blackberry juice, lemon juice, simple syrup and vodka together.
- Add ice and optional berries; stir gently and serve. The liquid is 7.25 fluid ounces before ice.
- Keep prepared juice/base at 40 F or below and use the day made. Do not put dry ice or activated charcoal in this drink.
Compared with Zesty South Indian Kitchen Black Widow . Packaged treated juice avoids the false claim that 1/2 cup berries reliably produces 4 fluid ounces strained juice.
Fresh blackberry component
For an optional homemade component, blend 150 g washed fresh blackberries with 1/2 tablespoon lemon juice and 2 tablespoons potable water for 30 seconds; strain finely. Measure recovery, rather than assuming 4 fluid ounces. For each drink use 4 fluid ounces strained mixture, 1 fluid ounce syrup and 2 fluid ounces vodka; omit the separate lemon juice. Makes one 7 fluid-ounce drink only if 4 fluid ounces are recovered; otherwise make a proportionally smaller drink or prepare more berries using the same ratio. Refrigerate promptly and use the day made. Washing does not pasteurize raw berry juice; use the packaged treated juice primary for guests at increased risk. Frozen berries: follow package cooking directions when required, cool in refrigerator, and measure juice after preparation; do not treat freezing as a kill step.
Vodka-Cassis-Coffee Version
2 drinks; 3.5 fluid ounces each plus shake dilution. 5 minutes.
Ingredients
- 2 fluid ounces vodka
- 3 fluid ounces creme de cassis
- 1 fluid ounce coffee liqueur
- 1 fluid ounce commercial ginger beer, chilled
- Ice for shaking; 4 washed blackberries, optional
Method
- Shake vodka and both liqueurs with ice for 15 seconds. Divide evenly between two chilled 6-fluid-ounce cocktail glasses.
- Add 1/2 fluid ounce ginger beer to each, stir gently and add optional berries.
The house splits the source’s large single drink into two; ginger beer goes in after shaking. Aimee Mars Black Widow supports omitting charcoal; its detox and tooth-whitening claims are rejected.
Tequila-Basil Version
1 drink; 2 2/3 fluid ounces plus berry juice and shake dilution. 5 minutes.
Ingredients
- 3 washed food-grown basil leaves and 2 washed blackberries
- 1 1/2 fluid ounces blanco tequila
- 1 fluid ounce lime juice
- 1 teaspoon agave nectar
- Ice for shaking/serving; 1 basil leaf and 1 blackberry, optional
Method
- Press berries and basil gently three times in a shaker. Add tequila, lime, agave and ice; shake 15 seconds.
- Fine-strain over fresh ice in a 10-fluid-ounce glass; garnish with optional basil leaf and berry.
Muddle/shake/strain comparison: GinFling Black Widow Tequila Cocktail . Counted leaves and berries add variable juice, so no exact final berry recovery is claimed.
Plain syrup and four-drink batch
For plain syrup, heat 1/2 cup sugar with 1/2 cup water 3-5 minutes until dissolved, cool promptly in an ice bath and refrigerate to 40 F or below; allow about 30 minutes cooling, longer if needed. Measure recovery, use 1 fluid ounce per main drink and reserve extra under the house policy. For four main drinks, combine 16 fluid ounces packaged blackberry juice, 1 fluid ounce lemon juice, 4 fluid ounces syrup and 8 fluid ounces vodka:29 fluid ounces. Divide 7.25 fluid ounces into each glass, add ice. Fresh-component batch: obtain 16 fluid ounces measured strained mixture, then add 4 fluid ounces syrup and 8 fluid ounces vodka, yielding four 7-fluid-ounce drinks; do not assume 2 cups berries will produce 16 fluid ounces. Cassis batch: multiply still ingredients by desired pairs, shake 3 fluid ounces base per drink and add 1/2 fluid ounce ginger beer. Muddle basil drinks individually.
Alcohol-free, black-vodka and sweetness branches
Alcohol-free main drink: replace 2 fluid ounces vodka with 2 fluid ounces cold water; use the same measured juice, syrup and lemon, for 7.25 fluid ounces before ice. For fizz use 2 fluid ounces labeled 0.0% soda instead of water and add last. A commercial black-colored vodka may replace ordinary vodka 1:1 according to its label; it remains alcoholic and is not a homemade catechu extract recipe. Unsweetened and sweetened flavored vodkas differ, so sweetness is adjusted by taste rather than automatically halving syrup. Less-sweet primary: start with 3/4 fluid ounce syrup, for 7 fluid ounces total. Adjust finished drinks with 1 teaspoon syrup or citrus at a time; each adds 1/6 fluid ounce.
Presentation corrections
Dry ice is omitted from serving drinks. FDA: Liquid Nitrogen and Dry Ice in the Food Code describes injury from accidental contact/ingestion; tongs do not prevent a guest from swallowing a piece. Charcoal dosing and color rescue are withdrawn. Berry color varies naturally and fine straining controls seeds, not safety. Refrigeration slows spoilage but does not establish a precise day when sugars begin fermenting.
Measuring and Keeping Drinks Cold
Liquid ounces mean US fluid ounces, not weight. A US cup is 8 fluid ounces, a tablespoon is 1/2 fluid ounce and a teaspoon is 1/6 fluid ounce. Metric amounts are exact where used; a litre is about 4.23 US cups. Drink volumes exclude ice and fruit. Choose a glass with room for the stated liquid, ice and fizz.
Use clean equipment and wash produce under running water before cutting. Choose pasteurized or otherwise safety-treated packaged juices, food-grown culinary herbs and potable water. Follow opened-package instructions. A concentrate must be diluted according to its label unless explicitly measured as concentrate. For alcohol-free drinks, choose mixers labeled 0.0% alcohol; the name ginger beer or kombucha alone is no guarantee. Avoid alcoholic bitters and alcohol-containing extracts in strict alcohol-free versions.
Keep prepared bases, cut fruit and homemade syrups at 40 F (4 C) or below. Check serving liquid with a thermometer; frozen fruit alone cannot establish cold holding. Discard perishables after more than two cumulative hours without cold holding, or one hour above 90 F (32 C). Replace warm remnants with clean chilled pitchers. Normal smell or appearance does not prove safety.
Use homemade fruit/herb syrups and juice bases the day made, or freeze promptly in small portions after cooling; thaw in the refrigerator and use that day. This is a conservative house handling policy, not a tested shelf-life claim. Add carbonation at serving, outside a sealed shaker. For hot drinks, hold at 140 F (60 C) or above, cool leftovers promptly in shallow containers or an ice bath and refrigerate within the limits above. A slow cooker’s low or warm setting is not a temperature reading.
Keep rosemary , thyme, cinnamon sticks, vanilla pods and whole spices on the table after straining, rather than in serving glasses. Fresh food-grown mint or basil leaves and washed fruit slices can be edible garnishes. Use glass or an intact food-safe lined mug for acidic drinks; bare copper is unsuitable.
These formulas are culinary house adaptations compared with the cited methods. No kitchen, sensory, pathogen, clinical, pressure, alcohol or shelf-life testing is claimed.
